We are lucky in Sun City Vistoso that we live close to some of the best hiking in Southern Arizona and our views include the mountains and foothills where our trail run. Enjoy the variety of hikes we offer listed in this newsletter.

Hiker Information:

Call guide to make reservation by 4pm the day prior to the hike. Before signing up for a hike, new members must go on an orientation hike. Hiking groups meet and depart from the cafe parking area at the golf course, unless indicated otherwise. The time listed is the departure time. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the departure time. If a hike involves bushwhacking, i.e., not on a trail, it is noted in the description. Always bring ample water, and wear appropriate headgear and footwear. Always wear your name badge. Hikers should let guide know when they sign up if they intend to drive, State and National Parks. Passengers are responsible for any other user fees.

Hike Ratings:

D: less than 4 miles or below 500 feet total climb.

C: 4-8 miles or 500-1500 feet total climb.

B: 8-16 miles or 1500-3500 feet total climb.

A: over 16 miles or over 3500 feet total climb.

(total climb is cumulative)

 

Medical Condition:

If you have a medical condition and/or are taking prescribed medications, please fill out the Emergency Medical Card and carry it in your pack while hiking.

 

How to Join Us

We welcome new members interested in joining the Vistoso Hiking Club. Please plan to attend a “New Member Orientation Hike” (prerequisite) by contacting Dave Fraser at 520-818-2434. These hikes are noted in this Newsletter and usually held monthly, however you must telephone in advance of the hike date if you wish to participate. February 27 Spring Picnic/Annual Meeting – Lunch will be served at 12 noon Catalina State Park large group picnic area.  Annual meeting will follow the lunch.

Friday, March 01, 2013,  Improved Big Wash and Bluffs [C/5mi/100’/$0/8am] Meet at Catalina Vista parking lot. Technically a bushwhack, this hike is in the wash or follows animal trails on the bluffs. There are excellent vistas.  We use a gate to avoid the fence.  This hike is on State Trust Land.  Paul Meier  818-0173.

 

Saturday, March 02, 2013,  Fifty Year Trail, North End. [C/9mi/1400’/$2/8am] Park at end of the paved part of Golder Ranch Road. A loop hike. Part of this hike is on State Trust Land. Gaston Meloche, 638-5404.

Monday, March 04, 2013,  Iron Horse/ Pie Allen History Hike [D/4mi/150’/$5/8am] This downtown neighborhood is on the National Registry.  The hike will review architecture and history in the area. Tuesday, March 05, 2013,   David Yetman Trail [C/7mi/700’/$5/8am]  Park at the Camino de Oeste trailhead and hike to the the historic Bowen  house for lunch. Continue on trails and jeep roads to  a trailhead west of Gates Pass where a car has been spotted. Larry Klein 825-7535.

Wednesday, March 06, 2013,  Big  Wash Clean-up/Bufflegrass Identification  [C/6mi/100’/$0/8:30am] Meet at Catalina Vista Rec. center (on  Del Webb) Clean up  Wash. Mileage is miles hiked plus 2 miles for each hour worked. You need to sign-up three days in advance so we can get the proper equipment. Gaston Meloche, 638-5404.

Take jeep rd and bike trail to Cougar Canyon windmill and explore some side trails or bushwack. Limit 12 people because of parking space for cars. This hike is on State Trust Land. Monday, March 11, 2013,   Pontatoc Ridge  [C/5mi/1500’/$3/630am] Park at end of Alvernon Way, hike to an abandoned mine, for good views of Tucson and Finger Rock and return. Lee Bomar 825-2702.

 

Tuesday, March 12, 2013,  Bellota Ranch [B/9mi/1600’/$6/7am] Park at Molino Basin parking lot. We climb 500 feet to a ridge, descend 900' to a valley, and stop at a spring that waters cattle. From there the trail is mostly level past the ranch buildings to a knoll where we snack. Return by the same route. Gaston Meloche, 638-5404.

Wednesday, March 13, 2013, CSP Canyon Loop/Sutherland/50-year trail “Big Loop” [B/9mi/600’/$2/10am] We follow an old Jeep trail to link with lower half of 50-year trail and return to Equestrian Center. Then back to main trailhead on Big Sand Wash and Bridle trails. Dave Fraser,818-2434.

Thursday, March 14, 2013,  Sutherland Ridge [A/15mi/4700’/$2/7am] Hike Canyon Loop Trail, follow Sutherland Cutoff Trail to Sutherland Trail, and head toward Mt. Lemmon. After first four miles across desert foothills we reach trees for shade and begin steeper climb. We stop at ridge top and return.  Roe Erlandson 638-5725.

 

Thursday, March 14, 2013,  Wasson Peak via King/Hugh Norris/Esperanza South trails OR vice-versa [B/8 mi/1800/$6/7am] Park at trailhead near Arizona Sonora Desert Museum Entrance. Hike up King Canyon Trail past petroglyphs to Hugh Norris Trail, past old mines to highest peak in Tucson Mountains. Return on Hugh Norris Trail to Esperanza trail, south on Esperanza Trail to King Canyon Trail and return to parking area. NOTE: This hike will be done in reverse and/or by following north side of King Canyon Trail along wash to/from Esperanza Trail. Gaston Meloche, 638-5404.

 

Friday, March, 15 2013,  Sutherland Wash and Sheep Tank  Petroglyphs  Exploratory  [C+/7mi/600’/$2/7:30am] Park cars at the Corral one-half mile from the end of Golders Ranch Rd. Hike a jeep trail down to some big cottonwood trees. Cross the wash and head south on a trail for 1.5 miles to find some petroglyphs. Take an exploratory trail  to the Sheep Tank petroglyphs site one-half mile away in a smooth rock canyon to find a lunch spot. Return to the cars via the same route. Saturday, March 16, 2013,  Sycamore Canyon Loop [B/9mi/1500'/$6/6am] Tuesday,Park at old prison camp, hike to Sycamore Canyon Trail, down to dam and along stream to Bear Canyon Trail, make a 1.6 mile loop, and return to parking. Gaston Meloche, 638-5404.

 

Saturday, March 16, 2013, Milagrosa Ridge [B/8mi/600’/2000’/$6/8am] A key exchange or shuttle. You need two cars. Take Catalina Highway to Snyder Road.  Go East on Snyder Road to Avenida de Suzenu. Turn left to Horse Head. Leave one car at the intersection of  Avenida De Suzenu and Horse Head. Drive the other car(s) to Molino Basin and begin hike there. Walk across Catalina Highway. Hike a steep climb over a ridgetop, then down toward Bellota Ranch. At a “T” in the trail turn south and follow a ridge between Milagrosa and Agua Caliente Canyons. When you get to the end of  the trail you'll go through a steel gate. Go down the hill and bear right to Horse Head and follow the road to the car at Avenida de Suzenu.  Bob & Leslie Esparza, 825-8271.

Sunday, March, 17 2013,  Green Rock Summit [C/4mi/700’/$2/9am]  In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day we continue the traditions and bring ‘green’ goodies and sing the old Irish songs atop of the summit of Green Rock.  Hike Canyon Loop Trail, then a bushwhack scramble to the top of Green Rock.   Christa and Michael Lubatkin 239-8001.

Tuesday, March 19, 2013,  Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness West [B/12mi/200’/$9/7am] This pristine wilderness is a walk on the wild side; no trails, no signs; no facilities. It includes stream crossings that can be up to knee deep. This hike will include a 2 night stay at the Aravaipa Canyon Ranch at a cost of $70 plus the entrance permit; of $5 per day; limited to 14 persons. Start at 2630'. Deadline February 14th. Wednesday, March 20, 2013,  Brandenburg Mtn/Araviapa Overlook [C+/5mi/1200'/$9/7:15 am]  Park along Araviapa Rd just before the BLM station and hike up wash to cairn marked trail.  Follow marked trail up to road that traverses flat area around Brandenburg Mtn.  Follow this road to wonderful overlook of the Araviapa canyon.  Intent is to meet with additional VHC hikers staying at the Araviapa Canyon Ranch at 9 am and proceed to hike.  Hike will be available to both those staying at the Araviapa Canyon Ranch and those of us wanting to do a day trip from SCOV. Thursday, March 21, 2013,  Baby Jesus Trail [B/9mi/1500’/$2/8am] Golder Ranch road to Catalina State Park main TH. A key exchange or shuttle. The trail goes through a finest stand of saguaros. Follow jeep trails and animal trails to Honeybee Canyon. Go south past the upper dam and return via Rancho Vistoso. This hike is on State Trust Land. Clive Probert 825-8719

Wednesday, March 27, 2013, Catalina Highway McDougal Ridge [C/6mi/1100’/$6/7am] Park at Babad Duag Overlook, hike Babad Duag Trail on  southern slope to about 4800', generally paralleling Soldier Canyon. You see the McDougal Barrel Cactus and learn origin of ridge name. We continue past "End of Trail" sign about 1/3 mile to a series of waterfalls and have lunch. Dave Fraser, 818-2434.

Saturday, March 30, 2013,  Wine & Cheese Event-  Join National Park Ranger Al Watson and Don Kucera of The Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona for a one hour program on the historic Anza Trail.  Presentation starts at 2 PM in the Native American Rooms social hall with wine and cheese to follow.  This is a good time to pay your 2013-2014 VHC membership dues as the current & new treasurer will be available to take your check (no cash please).

Tuesday, April 02, 2013,  Aspen Draw to Lemmon Rock Lookout [C/6mi/1250’/$10/8am] Park at foot of ski lift, hike Aspen Draw Trail to top of Mt. Lemmon then down the Meadow Trail to the Mt. Lemmon Trail and up to the Lemmon Rock Lookout [outstanding views], then back to ski lift top and down  the Aspen Draw Trail to the cars. Start at 8400'. Larry Klein 825-7535.

 

Tuesday, April 02, 2013,  Armory Park History Hike [D/4mi/100’/$6/7:30am]] This hike offers a tour of the Armory Park neighborhood. The area was settled in the period 1880-1920 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The tour will focus on architectural styles, noteworthy buildings, and historic preservation. Lemmon Road to Nugget Canyon turnoff, loop up canyon, and back down through Peppersauce Canyon, passing Peppersauce Cave and some old mining relics.
